The Scarecrow's Wedding

Written by Julia Donaldson

The Scarecrow's Wedding is a fabulous love story, with drama, humour, originality - and a happy ending! Two scarecrows, Betty O'Barley and Harry O'Hay, are planning the perfect wedding. But wicked scarecrow, Reginald Rake, has other ideas and almost ruins their special day. Harry must become a hero before he and Betty can have the wedding of their dreams.

Axel says:

Two Scarecrows are getting married... it raised a few questions for me as the illustrator. How do they move about? On one 'wooden leg' or two? In the first version of the text they 'hopped' about. I thought they should really walk. Would they have their arms outstretched all the time? But then they hug and they kiss and carry buckets and flowers. We decided they should move more like humans. The good thing about picture books: not anything, but many things are possible. I still wonder why Harry didn't pick up the snail and carry it to the pail. Can't wait for the sequel: The Scarecrow's Divorce!
